Earthquake off coast shakes northern California

No injuries or damage was reported by local authorities from the quake, which was measured at 5.3 on the Richter scale.

A New Year’s earthquake has rattled the coast of northern California.

The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that the earthquake reached 5.3 on the Richter scale, which is considered a moderate earthquake, according to the Associated Press.

The quake was center in the Pacific Oean about 70 miles west of Ferndale, Calif., which is about 100 miles south of the Oregon state line, and about 275 miles from Sacramento, the California state capital. It happened at about 4:16 a.m. PST today.

Ferndale City Police reported some slight shaking in the area, and no damage or injuries had been reported.

Back in August, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake about 250 miles from this most recent quake caused a great deal of damage in Napa, Calif.
