As the city of Ferguson, Mo., awaits a decision on whether a grand jury will indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting of an unarmed black man this summer — which could come in days — sales of guns int he area of flying off the shelves.

Although technically the grand jury has until January to decide whether it will indict Darren Wilson, the prosecutor’s office has indicated that could happen in mid-November, and local gun owners have been seeing big sales lately, according to a CNN report.

Protesting and clashes between police and protesters became commonplace in the St. Louis suburb after 28-year-old white police officer Darren Wilson fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, on Aug. 9. Wilson claimed that Brown struggled with him and attempted to take his gun, whereas some witnesses said Brown was surrendering and had put his hands up. Forensic tests later found Brown’s blood in Wilson’s police cruiser, on his gun, and on his uniform.

Afterward, Ferguson residents organized in large protests, prompting the Ferguson police to response with military-like riot control equipment, further escalating tensions between the two sides. With the grand jury set to decide soon on whether Officer Wilson will face charges, local residents are now preparing for further unrest — perhaps similar to what happened in Los Angeles after the officers who beat Rodney King were absolved of wrongdoing.

CNN quotes one owner of a gun store who said customers bought 100 guns this weekend, compared to a typical weekend of just 30. Another gun shop said it saw gun sales jump 40 to 50 percent since last week. They also said they are seeing new faces at the gun range as people seek to become acquainted with their new firearms.

Some shops are even boarding up as if preparing for a hurricane. CNN noted that the restaurant “Taste of Honey” is being boarded up out of concerns that rioters and looters will damage it.

However, protesters have argued that problems from looting have been minimal and have been committed by a few bad actors, and in general protesters have been peaceful, albeit loud.
