Microsoft to open mini-store within Best Buy

Microsoft teams up with Best Buy.

You’ve heard of the Apple store, now check out the Microsoft store.

Thanks to a recent collaboration between Microsoft and Best Buy, the software developer will launch a series of 1,500 and 2,200 square-foot stores within Best Buy locations around North America. Microsoft stores will begin their advance later this month, rolling out to 500 different locations across the United States, and expanding to roughly 100 Canada locations as well.

Much like the Apple store, which allows customers to come in and try out merchandise in an interactive shopping environment, the new Microsoft stores will encourage customers to play around with the latest in Windows computers, tablets, phones, and software programs. The upcoming Xbox One will also be one of the stores’ features.

But while the new stores will serve as Microsoft’s Best Buy hub, their products will not be eradicated from other corners of the facility. According to a recent blog interview with Chris Capossela, Microsoft products will still appear on the shelves of different sections throughout Best Buy, but the new Microsoft store will really target the retail experience the company is going for.

And the retail experience is getting more important for tech gadgets, even as online shopping begins to overwhelm most other markets. One of the reasons Apple has been able to do so well and convert so many customers to their products and systems over the years is that they provide a remarkably open retail environment. When they first opened, Apple stores were groundbreaking in the way they let customers try out new products, learn all about them, and ask any range of questions, and they made it so customers were trusting and desiring the Apple brand much more than they were the Microsoft one.

Microsoft is not the first company to team up with Best Buy in this fashion. Apple products have been featured in similar fashion before, and Samsung is in the process of building up their own “store-within-a-store” at Best Buy locations around the country.
