Trump has questioned if the US should de-fund the UN in protest to its lack of effectiveness and in light of the United Nations draft resolution.
This is an Egyptian-sponsored resolution that would condemn Israeli housing construction in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank. The resolution referred to the settlement as a “flagrant violation under international law” that was “dangerously imperiling the viability” of a future peace settlement establishing a Palestinian state.
We need to stand by Israel. They are a long standing ally. To abandon that would be foolish on many levels. It is very encouraging to hear Trump say that he will not allow Israel to be treated with disdain when he told Israel to stay strong until the swiftly approaching Jan 20th.
But the most important reason that we should stand with Israel is not as politically correct as “they are allies”. We should stand with Israel because God stands with Israel. Whether you believe it and whether you care doesn’t matter. The reality is that Trump and Pence are Christians and it looks like they intend to fully represent the Christian world view. Thank God.
Is it Biblical to stand with Israel? Yes, it is very Biblical:
“I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” – Genesis 12:3
“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you.” – Psalm 122:6.
Do we really need the UN anyway? I think the UN ties us down and takes some of our sovereignty away. I don’t think it would be a real loss to us if we bowed out, but what would they stand to lose?
It looks as though the UN could stand to lose quite a lot.
The U.S. has accounted for 22 percent of the total regular budget every year since 2000. We are a major contributor compared to others:
Japan 10.83 percent
Germany 7.14 percent
France 5.59 percent
Britain 5.18 percent
China 5.15 percent
Italy 4.45 percent
Canada 2.98 percent
Spain 2.97 percent
Brazil 2.93 percent
Russia 2.44 percent
Australia 2.07 percent
Given those numbers, I doubt with a real threat of the United States pulling their funds from the United Nations that this resolution will pass. It will likely be vetoed.
