ISIS releases ‘hit list’ of 100 U.S. troops

The Islamic State claims that they obtained the information through its "hacking division," but it appears they simply gleaned it from news reports.

The Islamic State has posted a list of the names, photos, and addresses of 100 American military personnel, a so-called “kill list” that is being circulated in the hopes that ISIS sympathizers in the United States will take action.

Authorities are taking the list seriously, as even though they don’t believe that ISIS has the capability to strike at the United States from abroad, there is the real possibility of “lone wolf” attacks, according to a Christian Science Monitor report.

It’s also a bit of marketing for ISIS, which is using social media to create the illusion of a greater amount of global reach than it has. Some might argue it’s the only thing ISIS has been successful doing considering the fact they are being pushed back by a rather rundown Iraqi Army after some small gains last summer.

ISIS claimed to get the information on the service members through its “hacking division,” but a New York Times report indicated that the list seems to be simply taken from news accounts of air strikes against the Islamic State, with the rest of the information simply gleaned from public records and social media.

The group claimed it was targeting those individuals because they participated in efforts that targeted ISIS in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and other locations. The Defense Department said it was investigating the posting.

The list contains some errors. In one case, it includes a list of B-52 crew members who are stationed in Louisiana and North Dakota, despite the fact that none of those aircraft have been used in the air campaign against ISIS.

It also features pictures of several women, with their faces blurred.
