Marvin Gaye’s family suing hip-hop star T.I. – “I don’t steal from anybody”

Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke, producers of megahit “Blurred Lines,” which was named biggest-selling song of 2013, were recently slapped with a judgement of copyright infringement and ordered to pay over $7 million to the family of Marvin Gaye, in a decision which may have ramifications in the music world for years to come.

Their collaborator, rapper T.I., seems fairly certain he won’t end up in the same boat.

“I don’t know what’s going on. I never really got caught up in that. I have nothing but admiration and respect for the legacy and estate of Marvin Gaye and I have nothing but support and extreme admiration for my partner Pharrell as well as Rob,” he tells TMZ. “I know that I’m a writer, I’m a creator, I don’t steal from anybody creatively when I make my music. I know that and I think anybody with common sense is going to be able to see that whenever they listen to it.”

But now the hip-hop heavyweight has been named in a new suit, which calls for the judge to include him as well as all record labels involved in the single’s release.

Apparently the Gaye family doesn’t care whether T.I. penned his own contribution to “Blurred Lines” or not – they’re set on going after anyone who was involved in the collaboration and promotion of the song and have vowed not to rest until all parties involved have forked out a share of cash and the song is taken down from iTunes, Spotify, and all other music-sharing platforms.

For his part, Pharrell Williams has vehemently denied all accusations of copyright infringement, while lawyer Howard E. King has revealed that the court’s ruling will be disputed, admitting: “I feel like I’ve let songwriters around the world down.”
