Durham couple in their 70s dead of apparent murder-suicide

A 74-year-old man and his 71-year-old wife were found dead from an apparent murder-suicide in their Durham, Conn., home on Tuesday evening. The bodies of Donald Bourret and Terry Oakes Bourret were found after a 911 call at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday reported that there were two people dead inside the home.

Troopers found both had been killed by gunshot wounds to the head. The family dog was also found dead outside the house. On Wednesday the state medical examiner’s office said determined that Terry’s death was a homicide and Donald’s a suicide. A gun was found near one of the bodies, although police did not specify which one.

Terry Bourret was a well-known art teacher and painter who also worked as a nurse for many years in Hartford before becoming a full-time artist. The family home was also her studio, where she gave art lessons. She was a member of Connecticut Woman Artists Inc. for many years, and was reportedly proud of her paintings of local scenes. Donald Bourret was a retired movie buff who wrote a movie review column for the Durham Library. The last review he wrote was of Jake Gyllenhaal’s movie Nightcrawler. Library Director Trish Connolly described the Bourrets as “lovely people” who attended a lot of library programs.

Photos were taken both outside and inside the home. News reports showed that the troopers’ focus appeared to be concentrated on the back of the house where the art studio was. Troopers were at the house through Wednesday morning. The shooting remains under investigation by state police.
