‘Empire’ soundtrack set to snatch top spot on Billboard charts

Fox’s runaway hit “Empire” can now add a chart-topping soundtrack to its impressive pedigree.

Just Jared reports that the “Empire” soundtrack, which was just released last week, is poised to have a number one debut on the Billboard 200 chart, dethroning Madonna‘s new album Rebel Heart.

While the official numbers haven’t been confirmed yet, Deadline is reporting that “Empire” will be boasting the first network TV soundtrack featuring songs performed by the original artist to top the Billboard chart since “Miami Vice” back in 1986.

Longtime hit maker Timbaland serves as music supervisor for the show, and with the support of his protégé, Jim Beanz, he’s churned out catchy, original tunes to accompany the dramatic plot twists. There are 18 original songs listed on the soundtrack, plus dozens more on the “Empire” Spotify soundtrack. There are even rumors of taking the show on a “Glee”-style tour.

Beanz, whose real name is James David Washington, reveals that he and Timbaland get notes from director Lee Daniels on how the songs should sound in order to convey a feeling or plot point. “Music for television is absolutely different than music for radio,” Washington told The Huffington Post. “The idea for the songs can change at the drop of a dime.”

“Empire” is setting records left and right – its audience grew every single week since its debut 10 weeks ago,  and it boasts a weekly audience of over 14 million people heading into tomorrow’s sure-to-be-explosive season finale.

To drum up excitement for both the album release and the finale, stars Jussie Smollett and Bryshere Gray, who play musical brothers Jamal and Hakeem Lyon, were out and about in New York City doing press tours. Grace Gealey, who portrays Lucious Lyon’s scheming ex Anika, was also seen dropping by the office of Essence magazine.
