Disney Land measles outbreak seems to have peaked

The outbreak is finally slowing down.

Since February 27, only one new case of the measles outbreak affecting 17 states has been reported. The most recent case, number 173, was reported in Ventura County according to the state Department of Public Health. Sheila Murphy of the Ventura County Health Care Agency says that this most recent case didn’t appear to be measles at first and actually needed to be retested and confirmed before administering the actual diagnosis.

According to the state, of all the measles cases in California, 40 were linked directly to Disneyland visitors or workers who were at the park in late December, between December 17-20. When the outbreak was on the rise, cases of measles had been reported in Washington, D.C., Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Washington. Most people contracted the virus from someone living in the same house or another close relation, but some also contracted it in community settings like in a waiting room when a patient was there awaiting treatment for measles. In most cases, the victims were unvaccinated.

The United States wasn’t the only place affected by the illness. Over 100 cases were also reported in Canada. All these cases were traced back to two families that visited Disneyland in late December. All the Canadian cases involved unvaccinated people.
