Philadelphia cop gunned down while buying gift for his son

The officer and the two robbers exchanged 50 rounds in just 30 to 40 seconds, and his partner later caught the robbers trying to flee the store.

A Philadelphia cop has been gunned down after going shopping for a gift for his son to reward him for good grades.

Officer Robert Wilson III had exited his squad car and was standing at the counter at a GameStop when police say two men, brothers Carlton Hipps and Ramone Williams, walked into the store with guns, according to a CNN report.

They held up the store, thinking it would be an easy target as it was in a fairly quiet area in a cul-de-sac, and they had not noticed a police car outside, authorities said. Wilson’s partner, Damien Stevenson, was waiting in the car outside.

Apparently, they also did not notice 8-year-veteran Wilson at first, despite being in uniform, but when he confronted them, gunshots rang out.

Wilson separated himself from other people in the store to keep them from being hit by bullets, police said based on security camera footage from the shooting.

A fierce gunfight ensued, as the officer and the brothers fired a total of 50 rounds at each other in just 30 to 40 seconds. Police said Hipps and Williams ducked behind movie posters as they shot at Wilson, who was hit multiple times in the body and once in the head, which ultimately ended his life.

The brothers fled the store, police said, and then Stevenson spotted them and shot Hipps in the leg, prompting Williams to run back into the store. Williams tried to pretend he was just another customer when he was arrested, and he later confessed to the shooting, police said.

The brothers have been charged with murdering Wilson and attempting to kill Stevenson.

It was the first robbery attempt by the brothers, although they had gotten in trouble before. The 26-year-old Williams had been arrested two times and Hipps, 30, has been arrested six times.

Authorities later found an AK-47 at their home. The guns they used in the robbery were purchased on the street, police said.
