Ferguson Police Department begins to crumble as officers quit, clerk fired

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said Friday that he is prepared to use all the power available to make sure the situation in Ferguson changes, including dismantling the police force if that is what is necessary. Holders comments came after revelations about police department racist activities were uncovered by a U.S. Department of Justice investigation of racial prejudice was released earlier this week.

Two police officers, Sgt. William Mudd and Capt. Rick Henke, resigned on Thursday as a result of emails discovered during the investigation. Mary Ann Twitty, Ferguson’s top court clerk, was fired in connection with the emails. Although the emails were forwarded throughout the department, the report found no evidence that anyone had ever been disciplined.

One of the emails in question showed a picture of a bare-chested African woman dancing. The caption read “Michelle Obama’s High School Reunion.” Another portrayed the president as a chimpanzee. Yet another described a man justifying putting his dogs on welfare because they were unemployed, lazy, mixed in color, non-English speaking and did not know who their daddies were. Officials did not comment on whether any of the three employees were involved in either writing or forwarding them.

The report, released on Wednesday, described the primary function of the Ferguson police and Municipal Court to be making poor black people pay as many fees and fines as possible for real or petty offenses. The Justice Department called the city’s system and some of the people in it to be racially discriminatory and described the police as brutal.

Twitty was mentioned in the report for routinely dismissing tickets for her friends. Emails such as “your ticket of $200 has magically disappeared!” were found sent from Twitty to friends.

Critics are calling for Police Chief Thomas Jackson to resign and the Ferguson Police Department to be disbanded. Major James Knowles said that the city is going to do their “due diligence and hold people accountable,” when asked if Jackson would be fired. Knowles said that he does not think the police department will be disbanded.
