Leonardo DiCaprio signs multiyear documentary deal with Netflix

DiCaprio hopes his deal with Netflix will give documentary filmmakers "the chance to have their films seen immediately by audiences all around the world."

Leonardo DiCaprio and Netflix recently collaborated to create the Oscar-nominated documentary feature Virunga, and the streaming service is eager to continue their successful partnership with the philanthropic actor-producer. Appian Way, DiCaprio’s production company, has reportedly signed a multiyear deal to create a slate of documentaries and docuseries which will premiere exclusively on Netflix.

DiCaprio, a longtime environmental philanthropist and activist, acted as executive producer on last year’s Virunga. The Netflix documentary chronicled the plight of mountain gorillas in Africa, and the icnoic actor-producer believes it offered “a window into the incredible cultural and natural diversity of our world, the forces that are threatening to destroy it, and the people who are fighting to protect it.” Following Virunga‘s best documentary feature Oscar nomination, Appian Way and Netflix discussed the possibility of further collaborations, and DiCaprio’s production company agreed on Wednesday to release several nonfiction projects for the streaming service that will have environmental and conservation themes.

In a press statement regarding the multiyear deal, DiCaprio stated that “there’s never been a more critical time for our planet or more of a need for gifted storytellers to help us all make sense of the issues we face.”

“Through this partnership with Netflix, I hope to give documentary filmmakers doing urgent and important work the chance to have their films seen immediately by audiences all around the world,” said DiCaprio.

“This partnership is a natural extension of our incredible relationship with Leo on Virunga,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We look forward to building on our shared success with more thought-provoking, high-quality documentaries and docuseries.”
