Oprah Winfrey announces closure of her Chicago studios

Goodbye, Chicago. One of the city’s most famous residents, Oprah Winfrey, has announced she will be closing her Chicago-based studio.

As The Hollywood Reporter reported, Winfrey made the announcement to her staff on Tuesday March 3. Her company, Harpo Studios, will close its Chicago doors by the end of the year. Winfrey, 61, has run the company for 26 years, and currently shares presidential duties with Sheri Salata and Erik Logan.

In a phone interview with THR, Winfrey admitted she was feeling nostalgic about the decision, saying that,“I’ve spent more hours in this building than I have any other building on earth.”

Harpo Studios will be moving its operations to Los Angeles to join Winfrey’s main project, her cable network OWN. OWN is based in a West Hollywood location, and Winfrey and her co-presidents feel strongly about consolidating the team under 1 roof. 4 years after its creation, OWN continues to struggle to find solid ratings but has grown them slightly for 3 consecutive years.

Approximately half of Harpo Studios’ employees will be making the move to LA. The remaining employees will retain their jobs until December, despite the studio closure.

Winfrey explained, “The time had come to downsize this part of the business and to move forward. It will be sad to say goodbye, but I look ahead with such a knowing that what the future holds is even more than what I can see.”
