Lady Gaga takes the plunge for the Special Olympics

Lady Gaga was doing her part to give back to charity this weekend by participating in the Chicago Polar Plunge at Lake Michigan. The event raises money for a specific chapter of the special olympics, and the events organizers did not know that Gaga was coming until right before the event began.

Gaga chose to participate in the event alongside new fiance Taylor Kinney, and the two took the plunge into the lake with Gaga on Kinney’s back. Four of Kinney’s costars on Chicago Fire were also there to participate in the icy dip(Randy Flagler, David Eigenberg, Jon Seda and Brian Geraghty), and Vince Vaughn was the official guest of honor.

Lady Gaga was recently engaged to boyfriend Taylor Kinney when he popped the question on Valentine’s day this year. He presented Gaga with a heart shaped engagement ring.

The couple have been dating since they met in 2011 on the set of her music video for the song You and I.

In addition to the celebrity appearances, 4,500 other participants showed up to do the Polar Plunge on Sunday. According to the National Weather Service, the air outside was only 20 degrees at the time.

Casey Hogan, the president of Special Olympics Chicago had nice things to say about Gaga’s participation.

“She’s pure heart. She came out for the cause – low key, no press. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

The Special Olympics program offers training and events all year round all over the world. Each year there are over 70,000 events that take place for people with disabilities. Much of the support that the Special Olympics gets comes in the form of sponsors and volunteers.

This Sunday’s Polar Plunge raised $1.1 million for the organization, which is the highest it has pulled in.

Many of the local participants showed their spirit for the event by dressing up in costumes
