Lupita Nyong’o’s stolen Oscar dress has been recovered

Lupita Nyong’o attended this years Oscars outfitted in a custom Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa dress that was adorned with 6,000 pearls.  The actress looked so stunning in the $150,000 gown apparently, that someone else decided that the dress should belong to them instead. Lupita’s gown was reportedly stolen right from her hotel room following the ceremony, perhaps a door was left open.

Now a dress has been recovered that appears to be a match after the alleged thief called TMZ to say that he was returning the dress because the pearls on it were fake. The dress was placed in a garbage bag and returned to the London Hotel in West Hollywood, where it was found in a bathroom.

The police following the case mentioned that it closely resembled Lupita’s dress but they were still trying to determine its authenticity. Nicole Nishida, a Los Angeles sheriff’s spokeswoman made a statement.

“We do have possession of a dress that greatly reassembles the dress that was stolen but I don’t think at this time we can 100 percent say it’s that dress, but it greatly resembles it,” she said.

Two pearls were removed from the gown which were denied sales in garment district, which is when the thief decided to return the dress. There is supposedly a black market for high profile gowns such as this one, and alleged collectors as well.

Style expert and fashion commentator Mary Alice Stephenson spoke about it.

“There are a lot of collectors out there who are very private and have private collections of stolen merchandise. Some of these dresses have global fame as big as any Van Gogh,” she said.

Lupita had been a presenter at this year’s Academy Awards after winning an Oscar in 2014 for her role in Twelve Years a Slave. She was asked about her pearl heavy look this year that was topped off with beautiful Chopard diamond drop earrings and Chopard diamond rings.

“I’m just wearing my diamonds and pearls. My homage to Prince,” she said.
