3-year-old Texas boy dies after shooting himself in head

A 3-year-old Harris County, Texas, boy who accidentally shot himself in the head on Friday afternoon has died. The shooting occurred inside the family home. According to investigators, the boy’s mother was home with two of the family’s sons when the shooting happened. Investigators are calling it a tragic accident. The boy was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital by LifeFlight helicopter, where he died just hours later.

Neighbors said the family had only recently moved into the neighborhood. An entire block was blocked by crime scene tape immediately after the shooting. The boy was found by his mother, who called 911 for help, according to a spokesperson from Cy-Fair Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

Captain Romeo Chapa of Harris County Precinct 5 says that police believe the child’s parents have a permit for a concealed handgun. Investigators say that the boy found the gun in a purse up on a shelf. The other child present in the home was not injured.

Neighbor Sonora Storm said she was thinking that it was horrible that a child that young could gain access to a gun. She said “you don’t want to blame the parents,” but that if she had a 3-year-old in the house there would not be a gun.

A grand jury will decide if the parents of the boy will face any charges, once an investigation has been completed. Child Protective Services said that it is investigating the case, although no one has yet spoken to the family. A 1-year-old and a 7-year-old reportedly also live in the home.
