Train crash in California injures 28

Before dawn on Tuesday morning, a Metrolink passenger train hit a pick-up truck and trailer that was stalled on the tracks. As many as 28 people were injured in the train crash, and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. Two people were taken to the hospital later, bringing the number treated to 30.

The train wreck took place in Oxnard, California, which is located in the southern part of the state. The truck’s trailer was carrying welding equipment, which burst into flame when the train struck it.

The train is believed to have been moving at 79mph just before it hit the brakes. The force of the collision derailed five cars, and three of the double-decker passenger cars ended up on their side. The engine was at the back of the train, and remained on the track. Altogether, 50 people were injured. Four people are in critical condition, including the train’s engineer. No one was killed.

The injuries on 28 of the passengers were serious. They included broken bones, head trauma, and injuries to the neck and back. Two women have had surgery.

The truck and trailer were totally burned and destroyed in the collision. The truck driver left the scene of the accident and was found walking about 1.6 miles away. He was found by police to be somewhat disoriented and was immediately arrested. He has been taken to a hospital for observation, and to check for drugs or alcohol. Authorities do not believe the truck was parked on the tracks intentionally, but he has been charged with felony hit-and-run.

The train accident would have been much worse if the cars were not equipped with collision energy management technology. The upgrades occurred after another train crash took place in 2008, when 25 people were killed. In this train wreck, the engineer applied the brakes when he saw the truck, which also helped to spare lives.

The Metrolink train cars are specially designed with crumple zones to help disperse the energy from the crash. Another change is that the windows can be easily removed by emergency crews, and in this case, nearly all of the passengers had been removed within an hour after the accident.

The location of this train wreck is the same one where 13 other train wrecks have occurred since 1976. It is a dangerous intersection, and there are only 52 other crossings in the United States that are more dangerous.
