Google mobile search now highlights a ‘carousel’ of recent news stories

When users search Google moblie for a subject, they can now scroll through a rotation of the freshest content.

If you’ve performed a search using Google mobile today, you’ve probably noticed that something is a little different. Now, when users search for a topic, they can scroll down to see a “carousel” of recent articles, videos or more on that subject.

“Whether you’re looking for the latest clips from The Daily Show, news about the possibility of Greece leaving the Eurozone, or highlights from today’s Panthers game against the Canadiens, it can be hard to sift through all the great videos, articles and more out there to find what interests you,” Google wrote on its official search blog post introducing the feature.

To help streamline the searching process, the rotating  carousel provides the “freshest and most relevant content” from a single source. And the technique works for individual websites as well. For instance, searching for “NPR” will bring up a rotation of all the latest articles and videos on the NPR website. TechCrunch reports that this feature applies to keyword searches as well.

While not every website has this functionality across the board yet, Google claims that they are working on adding sites, and that new ones will appear “soon.”

With an increasing number of users accessing Google search through their mobile devices, this innovation should be a welcome one. It should also help distinguish Google’s product from competing search engines like Yahoo or Bing.
