Obama spends Valentine’s Day without Michelle, golfing in Southern California

The president spent the day golfing with childhood friends before retiring to the home of the man who worked on the interior design of the oval office.

President Barack Obama spent Valentine’s Day alone on vacation for the long President’s Day weekend, working on his golf game in Southern California.

Obama landed in the desert resort of Palm Springs on Saturday after flying from San Francisco and headed straight for the links after arriving at the Sunnylands retreat at Rancho Mirage, playing several rounds of a nine-hole course with two childhood friends from Hawaii and one friend from Chicago who met up with him, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

He had no public events scheduled during his getaway, and was expected to spend his time playing golf as he has done on past visits.

He left Sunnylands after about five and a half hours and spent time at the house of interior designer Michael Smith, who Obama is staying with for the weekend. Smith was tasked with decorating the Oval Office for Obama, and his partner, James Costos, is the U.S. ambassador to Spain.

It was his fourth visit to the estate since 2013, a place where Obama once invited Chinese President Xi Jingping for two days of talks.

Obama made the trip without his wife, Michelle, or his daughters, Malia and Sasha. During a weekly address, he wished his wife a happy Valentine’s Day, and she tweet a message and photograph back to him.

Obama first arrived in California on Thursday, and on Friday he addressed a White House summit on cybersecurity and consumer protection at Stanford University. He also spent time with Democrat Party donors in San Francisco and joined friends and aides for a dinner at a restaurant.

He will return to Washington on Monday, a federal holiday, and on Wednesday and Thursday he is scheduled to participate in another White House summit, this one on countering violent extremism. He will take a take a trip back to Chicago on Thursday to dedicate a national monument, and then address the Democratic National Committee’s annual winter meeting in Washington.
