Keyboards go silent at New York Times office in memory of David Carr

Carr, who was 58, was perhaps best known for his 2008 memoir detailing his drug addiction as well as launching the career of actress Lena Dunham.

The New York Times newsroom held a moment of silence Friday after the sudden death of prominent media critic David Carr.

The keyboards at the Grey Lady were silent as reporters gathered around the iconic red staircase at the center of the Times’ newsroom to remember the life of Carr at around 4 p.m., according to a New York Daily News report.

Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet addressed the gathered staff during the memorial, closing with an directive that they “go report and have fun.”

The memorializing didn’t end there, with colleagues and reporters taking to social media to add their stories and memories of Carr, a Times columnist who died at the age of 58, collapsing in the newsroom just before 9 p.m. on Thursday.

He is best known as the writer of the Media Equation column, as well as his memoir that detailed his struggle with drug addiction. He is also credited for being an influential in the creation of the HBO TV series “Girls.”

Carr was born in Minneapolis, where he grew and attended the University of Minnesota, studying psychology and journalism. His first job was at the alternative weekly Twin Cities Reader in the early 1980s. He later wrote for the Washington City Paper, the Atlantic Monthly, and New York magazine.

It was in 2002 when Carr joined the New York Times as a cultural reporter, writing the Carpetbagger blog for the paper. He would work at the Times until his death this week.

His 2008 memoir is perhaps what he is most famous for. Titled “Night of the Gun,” it described in detail his experiences with cocaine addiction and took the tone of someone reporting on himself.

He is credited with launching Lena Dunham’s career through a positive 1,000-word write-up of a movie called Tiny Furniture in the Times, of which the 23-year-old Dunham was the creator and star.
