Rocker Shirley Manson writes an open letter to Kanye West

The Scottish rocker tears West apart for his actions towards musician Beck

Scottish rocker Shirley Manson of Garbage apparently isn’t one to bottle things up. The singer wrote an open letter to Kanye West criticizing his actions in regards to recent Grammy winner Beck.

As reported by the Guardian, on Sunday night, Beck pulled out a surprise win for Album of the Year at the Grammys, beating artists such as Sam Smith and Beyonce for the award. West rushed on stage and appeared ready to interrupt Beck’s speech, as he had done during Taylor Swift’s 2009 win at the MTV Music Awards. He restrained himself and appeared to be merely making a joke at his own expense.

However, after the show, West spoke about the incident at the E! Afterparty, saying he really was angry about the win. As USA Today reports, West said that, “Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyonce, and at this point, we are tired of it.”

Manson for one was extremely offended. She wrote an open letter on her Facebook wall, telling West, “It is YOU who is so busy disrespecting artistry. You disrespect your own remarkable talents and more importantly you disrespect the talent, hard work, and tenacity of all artists when you so rudely and savagely after such an accomplished and humble artist like Beck.”

She continued, telling Kanye that he looked “small and petty and spoilt,” and needed to “grow up and stop throwing your toys around.” Her closing salvo was to remind West that, “Beyonce doesn’t need you fighting any battles on her account.”

West has not responded to the letter. Beck appeared largely unoffended by the whole situation, saying after the Grammys that, “I thought [Beyonce] was going to win…you can’t please everyone, man.”
