Uber to launch app-based panic button for passenger safety

The massively successfully taxi service Uber is reportedly working on an app-based panic button that would allow passengers to notify local authorities.

The button is set to launch in India, where the taxi service has faced threats of a ban after a series of alleged incidents. The button is said to be a direct response from the company and, according to representatives, shows the company’s commitment to passenger safety.

The button’s launch was announced on the company’s blog, where it noted the button would launch on February 11. Among the new features will be the ability of a passenger to share their location with friends and family during a ride.

The post notes that the Indian Department of Transportation requested the company install physical buttons in the cars, but Uber said an investigation into the matter revealed that physical buttons would have resulted in a far higher of unanswered requests for help. The company said real-time tracking and its vast network of resources would leave passengers in a far better situation, and provide them with more control over resolving matters. The team also noted that the buttons were prone to wear and tear, along with higher rates of a malfunction.

Earlier this month, the Times of India reported that Maharashtra state transport commissioner Mahesh Zagade was considering a ban on the Uber app if changes were not implemented. The state transport commissioner reportedly considered the ban after a woman claimed she was raped by an Uber driver in New Delhi in December, and recently filed a lawsuit.

It remains unclear whether the panic button will make an appearance in the U.S. The taxi service has faced a series of incidents outside of the U.S., a far higher number than in the U.S. The multi-billion dollar company has faced it share of hurdles within the U.S., although those hurdles have tended to be directly related to regulatory issues rather than passenger safety. The company has also faced scrutiny for its treatment of disabled passengers and id currently facing a lawsuit from the National Federation for the Blind based in the U.S.

The company has, however, faced some questions over its hiring of drivers. In 2014, the company faced a wave of criticism after it was revealed that it failed to do mandatory background checks on its drivers. The company eventually revamp its policy, but not before a number of passengers expressed outrage. Uber India recently announced a partnership with First Advantage, a global firm specializing in background checks.
