Senators consider bill banning orcas from Seaworld

Washington state is moving to ban the sale of whales, dolphins, and porpoises to zoo and SeaWorld-style displays.

State Senator Kevin Ranker, D-Orcas Island, has proposed a bill in the state legislature that would present an outline of cetaceans’-rights, the first such bill in country. The bill would also ban the cpature of the animals, using them for breeding, and importing cetaceans from other areas.

It remains unclear whether the bill has the necessary support to pass the legislative body. The bill would largely be symbolic since the state currently does not have any whales on display.

The bill comes as criticism of SeaWorld’s operations has grown. The company, which saw massive declines in its share value in 2014, has pushed to rebut allegations of shoddy handling of its animals. SeaWorld is reportedly working to fight similar bills, according to the Seattle Times, noting that the passage of one bill could lead to barrage of others across the country. According to the state committee overseeing the bill’s movement through the legislature, Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums will testify against the need for the bill.

The Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Parks is set to hear additional testimony on the matter, according to Ranker.
