New winter storm threatens to pound New England with more snow

The snowfall is set to begin early Monday morning and could hamper locales already struggling to deal with the aftereffects of a storm that ended days ago and dropped three feet of snow in some areas.

New Englanders likely will be rooting for their Patriots in the Super Bowl today, but they had better hurry home afterward: another batch of snow is set to slam the Northeast early Monday morning.

After hammering the Midwest on Saturday, a storm is likely to head to the East Coast and bring a foot of snow with it to New England, just days after a blizzard hit the region, according to a Reuters report.

Experts were projecting six to 12 inches of snow form Iowa to Massachusetts, and New York and New Jersey could see the worst of the storm when it reaches full capacity on Monday, according to the National Weather Service, which says that up to 100 million people could be affected by the snowfall.

The storm could also force thousands of flight delays and cancellations — again.

The storm that ended just a few days ago, while falling short of expectations in New York, dropped three feet of snow in New England. The new storm may put a strain on crews still trying to dig out of the last one.

The storm is likely to drop snow on the East Coast hours after the Super Bowl featuring the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, with snowfall set to begin in the early morning hours of Monday.

That means the area could be buried on Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, which is an annual tradition in Pennsylvania when Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow and predicts whether winter will end shortly or if there will be six more weeks of it based on whether he can see his shadow.
