A 3-year-old boy in New Mexico wounded both of his parents with one shot after getting a hold of a handgun in his mother’s purse, police said.

The boy apparently grabbed a handgun from his mother’s purse and fired a shot that wounded both his mother and father in the city of Albuquerque, according to an Associated Press report.

The boy was trying to treach for an iPod but came across the gun instead. The bullet hit his father in the buttock and then hit the shoulder of his mother, who is currently eight months pregnant. It did not strike his 2-year-old sister. Authorities are treating the situation as an accident.

The father was treated and released at the hospital, and the mother was reportedly in stable condition. They are being investigated to see if negligence charges should be filed.

The family had been living in a motel room at the time, according to a report, and child care officials are presently taking care of the kids.
