Worker killed on Scorsese set

A worker was killed at a Taiwanese film lot where Martin Scorsese was planning to shoot his next movie, Silence starring Liam Neeson.

The film was in pre-production at the Chinese Culture and Movie Center studio in Taipei when an existing structure on the CMPC backlot collapsed.

The production team has told the studio that they thought the structure was unsafe, so CMPC hired a contractor to reinforce the ceiling and make the building safe.

“Sadly, during the process, the ceiling collapsed, resulting in the death of one of the contractor’s employees and injuries to two others,” Leslee Dart, spokeswoman for Scorsese, said. “Everyone is in shock and sorrow and expresses their deepest concern and sympathy to the families of the individual who died and those we were injured.” She also called it “an unfortunate event”.

The contractor who was killed was named Chen Yu-lung.

The Taiwanese studio issued a statement saying the contracting film crew bore responsibility for health and safety in the accident, according to the Associated Press.

This isn’t the first death on a movie, TV, or stage set. The most recent death only happened last February when a Sarah Jones, a young camera assistant, was killed by a train while shooting a scene on a railroad bridge for a Gregg Allman bio-pic, Midnight Rider. The shooting has since been suspended.

Other deaths include actor Vic Morrow and two child actors who were killed by a helicopter on the set of Twilight Zone in 1983. Brandon Lee was shot by a real bullet in a prop gun on The Crow in 1993. Sarah Guillot-Guyard when her suspension wire broke during a Cirque du Soleil Show in 2013, where she fell 100 feet. These are just among a great many film, tv, and stage deaths.

Silence is originally a novel written by Japanese author Shusaku Endo in 1966. It’s about two Jesuit priests who traveled to Japan four centuries ago to spread Catholicism to an isolated country where it had been banned by the ruling shoguns.

Andrew Garfiled (The Amazin Speider-Man) and Adam Driver (Star Wars, Girls) will be co-starring along side Neeson.
