An individual has died and six people have been injured after a huge four-alarm fire broke out at a residential building in San Francisco.

The fire happened in the city’s Mission District, and onlookers watched as smoke and flames poured out of a mixed-use building, according to an SFGate.com report.

The fire, which happened Wednesday night, caused fire crews to flood the scene, pulling people from the building — many of whom were treated for smoke inhalation and burns. A firefighter was also injured.

At least 12 people were rescued from the blaze, including six people who had been stuck on the fire escape and others who were trying to hide in stairwells.

It took firefighters hours to control the blaze, which was still burning late Wednesday night.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the huge blaze, and many climbed firefighters until the flames forced them to retreat. They used hoses to push back the flames.

A resident of the building said in the report that his stepfather was cooking in the kitchen when he stepped out to use the building. After returning, he noticed flames blasting out of a wall, causing him to run around knocking on doors to alert neighbors to get out. He said everything happened very quickly.

The Mission District is located on the east side of central San Francisco. It is so named for the missions that were founded there in the late 18th century by the Spanish.
