Crowd protests shooting death of 17-year-old teen in Denver

Other girls who were in the car at the time argue that Jessie Hernandez was not a threat to the officers.

A large group of protesters gathered with signs outside of a police station in Denver after a teenage girl was shot to death by officers in a stolen car.

Protesters gathered outside the Denver jail and then headed to District 2 Police Headquarters in an attempt to meet police after the death of Jessie Hernandez, according to a local news report.

The 17-year-old girl was killed at around 6:30 a.m. on Monday after two Denver police officers responded to a stolen vehicle report in an alley. They approached the car and alleged that she used the car to strike an officer in the leg, prompting them to open fire.

Daniel Greene, an officer for 16 years, and 9-year veteran Gabriel Jordan were identified as the responding officers. They are currently on administrative leave.

Other girls who were in the car at the time said she had been threatening to the officers, and that they were backing up because there was a cop car in front, and the officer simply started shooting.

One of the officers suffered a leg injury from the car, but not a serious one, according to the report.

An investigation is being conducted into the shooting along with three others that involved an officer gunning down a suspect within the last seven months.

A Jan. 9 incident also involved an officer being struck by a car, and the suspect survived after being shot several times.

Interim Denver Sheriff Elias Diggins said that he will attempt to be transparent and pledged to get to the bottom of the shootings.
