Dalton Hayes of ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ crime spree slapped with statutory rape charges: authorities

Hayes was reportedly crying when he went into the courtroom, and said he wished he had bought bus tickets instead of stealing cars, according to reports.

Police have charged 18-year-old Dalton Hayes, one of two Kentucky lovestruck teens who went on a multi-state crime spree reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde, with charges of statutory rape and faced a judge on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty.

Hayes is facing the charges in Grayson County, where he is from, and is accused of burglary in the third degree, theft of $10,000 or more, custodial interference, criminal mischief in the first degrees, criminal trespassing int he third degrees, as well as second degree rape. He had a relationship with the 13-year-old girl who went along with him during the 1,300-mile crime spree, according to a USA Today report.

Hayes also has two outstanding warrants in Breckinridge County. He had a public defender appointed to him, and bond was set at $250,000. His next court appearance is set for Jan. 29.

Hayes was interviewed by Phil McGraw of TV advice show Dr. Phil at the Grayson County jail where he was being held. It prompted the judge to immediately issue a verbal gag order in the case, making it unclear if McGraw ever was able to speak to Hayes on camera.

Hayes and his girlfriend were accused of spending three months stealing cars and cashing checks that were left in one of the pickups. He was finally arrested in Panama Beach, Fla., a week ago, two weeks after his disappearance. The 13-year-old will face charges in juvenile court.

Hayes was reportedly crying as he entered the courtroom, according to a local news report. The teen had blamed his fleeing on an abusive family and said he wished he had purchased bus tickets instead of stealing trucks on their way to Florida, according to the report.
