Rainn Wilson is adamant: Don’t compare ‘Backstrom’ to Dwight Shrute

Rainn Wilson acquired a massive fanbase from playing the entertainingly neurotic Dwight Schrute on The Office, but the 49-year-old actor is warning fans not to expect the same likability factor from his title character in Fox’s mid-season procedural Backstrom. Wilson’s Detective Everett Backstrom displays racist, sexist, and homophobic tendencies, and the Dunder Mifflin alum fully anticipates he will make people “really angry.”

The Office viewers may have a hard time imagining a character more offensive and over-the-top than Dwight Shrute, but Backstrom is an even bigger fan of making politically incorrect comments that are sure to offend a great number of people.

“I’m sure we’ll get a lot of complaints,” said Wilson. “I hope Fox is ready to have people be really angry.”

Even though he expects Backstrom’s character faults to turn off some fans, Wilson said that they are what made him want to take on the role.

“He’s so fascinating and interesting and [has] so many facets and texture. I knew it was going to be something I would love to dive into,” he explained to reporters on set in Vancouver, adding that he wanted to find a role that people would have a hard time comparing to his old beet-loving paper salesman. “I know that most people are going to be like, ‘Oh, it’s Dwight as a cop’ or ‘Oh, he’s always going to be Dwight.’ But I’m excited for the challenge.”

Since Dwight’s purpose was primarily to drive the secondary plot of The Office or provide comic relief, Backstrom will mark Wilson’s first time playing a leading character, a change which he called “really freeing.” As for what what happen if Dwight Schrute and Everett Backstrom were ever in the same room together, Wilson told ET that the two would definitely not get along.

“I think Backstrom would just shoot him in the face.”
