Glee actress Melissa Benoist will be Supergirl in CBS pilot

Melissa Benoist is ready to move on from Glee and put on her new cape as Supergirl.

Benoist got her first break on the fourth season of Glee when she was the good girl Marley Rose. She was only on the show for two seasons. She started off as a recurring character in the fourth season, then she was promoted to series regular during the fifth season, but her character disappeared after the thirteenth episode of the fifth season.

And now, Melissa Benoist is flying off to her new show as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl. According to DC Comics, Kara Zor-El (Benoist) was born on the planet Krypton, but she escaped during its annihilation years ago and came to Earth, much like her cousin Kal-El. Since her arrival, she has been hiding her superpowers from mankind. But at age 24, she decides to embrace her abilities to be the superhero she was destined to be.

CBS does not have a lot of superhero shows, unlike other networks such as CW, but CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler explained last week that they see great potential in Supergirl. “It is a real passion of ours. We heard the pitch for Supergirl and realized that she embodied so many of the qualities and the characteristics of classic female heroines on this network. We think it is a story and a coming-of-age opportunity for us.”

CBS does not consider this to be just another superhero show. “There is a human drama there,” Tassler said. “We know there are so many superhero characters portrayed in films, but I think we’re watching an evolution with regard to the way they are portrayed.”

“There is a humanity. They are flawed.” She continued, “There is a relatability, and I think for our network right now, what we did respond to was the character’s humanity.”

Congratulations to Melissa Benoist for becoming Supergirl!
