Driver pinned between semis in Oregon tells harrowing story of his ordeal

Police said it was a miracle no one died in the 26-car pileup on I-84 Saturday, which started after a tractor-trailer hit black ice that had formed on the road.

Kaleb Whitby made headlines over the weekend after a photo of him sandwiched between two tractor-trailers on an icy Oregon interstate went viral. Now, he’s telling his story in more detail.

Whitby, 27, was driving on a foggy and windy day in Interstate 84 in Oregon near the Idaho border. He was on his way to Idaho to pick up some cattle from his home in southeastern Washington state. Before he could react, a semi truck had jackknifed ahead of him, caused him to plow in to the back of it and flip his pickup truck, according to a CNN report.

Then, he saw another tractor-trailer headed for him with the headlights filling his field of view. He closed his eyes and prayed, saying that that “was all I could do,” according to the report.

The tractor-trailer smashed into his pickup and crushed it. All Whitby could hear was the sound of glass shattering and metal crunching. When it was all over with, the shell of Whitby’s pickup remained, as did Whitby, who was pinned between the two trucks.

He said the collision spun the bed of his truck underneath the first trailer that he had collided with and then swung his nose around, putting it underneath the second trailer. He said if he had been pushed a foot further, he would have been crushed.

Not only did he not die, he had barely a scratch on him.

The collision was part of a 26-car accident on Saturday due to icy conditions, injuring 12. The chain reaction began when a semi spun out on black ice that had formed on the road.

Miraculously, there were not fatalities, although two were seriously injured.

With the help of passers-by, Whitby was apple to wiggle free of his smashed metal cage. He ended up with a bruise on his eyebrow and some scratches on his right hand.

He called the incident a miracle, and said he had some thinking to do to “figure out who I need to be in this life and what I need to accomplish,” according to the report.
