Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl bound after OT win against Packers in NFC Championship

Seattle comes from behind to take the NFC championship in overtime.

After a game riddled with errors by both sides, the Seattle Seahawks have emerged the winner and are bound for the Super Bowl, beating the Green Bay Packers in overtime to claim the NFC Championship. Seattle struggled in the first half of the game, with Russell Wilson throwing three  interceptions and Doug Baldwin fumbling a kickoff return. At halftime the score was 16-0 in favor of the Packers. Seattle did not manage to complete a pass until Wilson reached Ricardo Lockette for 14 yards near the end of the second quarter.

However, Seattle pulled things together in the second half, even as Green Bay fell apart. Seattle scored in the third quarter with a fake field goal that turned into a touchdown for offensive tackle Garry Gilliam, thrown by Jon Ryan, a play that brought the Seahawks back to life. They then cut the lead to 19-14 with rushing score by Wilson with just over two minutes on the clock.

Seattle scored 15 points in the last two minutes of the game, starting with special teamer Chris Matthews’ recovery of an onside kick that started a drive resulting in Marshawn Lynch running untouched into the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown. A 2-point conversion from Wilson to tight end Luke Willson put the Seahawks up by three, but Green Bay’s Mason Crosby managed a 48-yard kick with only 14 seconds left to tie the game.

Seattle won the toss in the overtime period and quickly moved the ball down the field, scoring on a 35-yard pass to Jermaine Kearse. The game’s final score was 28-22.

It was the biggest half-time deficit overcome in a conference championship game. The previous record was in 2006, when Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts came back from a 15-point deficit to beat the New England Patriots 38-34.

Wilson’s four interceptions in today’s game were a career-worst record, and, combined with five Seattle turnovers, made their victory one of the most remarkable in the team’s history. When it counted, Wilson came through, both throwing the perfect winning 35-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Kearse, and scoring his own 1-yard touchdown. The Seahawk quarterback broke down in tears during a post-game interview after Seattle’s improbable win.

Packers’ Aaron Rodgers was held to one touchdown and two interceptions. Crosby kicked three field goals in the first half.

The win was the ninth consecutive playoff game for the Seahawks at CenturyLink Field. Wilson threw for 209 yards and completed 14 of 29 passes. He improved his record against Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks to 10-0.

Marshawn Lynch was the Seahawks MVP, with 23 carries for 149 yards through regulation play. Richard Sherman had an interception and played through the fourth quarter with a left arm injury.

Mother Nature threw a variety of weather at teams and fans, sunny one minute and pouring rain the next.

Seattle will defend their Super Bowl title on Feb. 1 against the winner of today’s AFC championship game. They will attempt to become the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots did it in 2004.
