Rory McIlroy hits first competitive hole-in-one as professional

Rory McIlroy nabbed his first competitive hole-in-one of his professional career during the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Friday driving him into the second round. McIlroy high-fived Rickie Fowler, his playing partner and threw his hands up after he watched his 9-iron, from 177 yards, land a yard from the hole, hop right and creep into the cup. The shot surged a back nine charge for him, and he picked up four strokes in seven holes.

While walking up to the hole to repair his pitch mark and grab the ball, with loud cheers from the crowd filling the area, McIlroy said he would not be needing a putter for that hole. He said it “never left the pin.”

McIlroy is already in celebration mode. Speaking about his ace, he said it was his first one as a pro and “obviously beers are on me tonight.”

This marked off one of the few accomplishments McIlroy has yet to achieve. He said he has made 10 holes-in-one in his lifetime. He was nine years old when he hit his first with a 9-iron from 106 yards on his home course in Holywood, Northern Ireland. But he had never experienced the feeling of making that impossible shot while playing professionally until he swung at No.15.

McIlroy shot a 6-under 66 and slid into third place at 11 under. He said that he is happy with how he is playing. Although McIlroy displayed a stunning shot, it was not enough to push him past Martin Kaymer, who leads by two shots on the third day of competition.

Kaymer maintained a one-stroke lead overnight and is a serious front-runner as illustrated by his wire-to-wire victory at the U.S. Open in 2014 and his victory in Abu Dhabi in 2008. And he is reaching to deplete his record-low total in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which was 24-under 264, in 2011.

Kaymer claimed that the competition is one of the only ones where he can stand on the course knowing that he has “birdied every single hole.” His first-round 64 was proceeded with a 67 to set himself up for a solid chance at winning on the National Course for the fourth time.

Kaymer’s iron play and drive was strong in the first round, but his putting was lacking some strength. He currently holds a bogey-free score, which consists of five birdies, that could have been lower. His 3-footer on No.6 was one of several birdie chances dismissed.

Like McIlroy, Kaymer feels confident in the way he is playing. He said that he feels there is not “much that will go wrong” with his game. For his last 30 rounds on the National Course, Kaymer is 100 under par, according to ESPN.

Thomas Peters, 22-year-old Belgian who won the 2012 NCAA championship and attended the University of Illonois, currently stands between McIlroy and Kaymer on the leaderboard. Peters shot a 67 for 12 under.

Pablo Larrazabal, Matteo Manassero and Henrik Stenson all missed the cut at 2 under. Fowler shot a 75 to also drop to 2 under, and he barely made the tournament.

McIlroy was not the first to grab a hole-in-one on the 15th. Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez also made a hole-in-one in the first round. And the opportunity for more stunning shots is wide open for the remainder of the tournament, which will continue through Sunday.
