Bills welcome Rex Ryan

Rex Ryan's first days as head coach.

“Is this thing on?” joked newly appointed Bills coach Rex Ryan in a recent press conference as he approached the microphone. “Because it’s getting ready to be on.”

The longtime New York Jets coach was only appointed last week, yet he has already promised next season to be “their season.” He went on to say he refuses to let the fans and organization down. “The Buffalo Bills represent this community of Buffalo. We’re going to be as loyal to our fans as they are to us.”

Rex Ryan’s ties with the city of Buffalo go much deeper than his new job as head coach. Ryan recollected all the visits to Buffalo in his youth, when he lived in Toronto with his mother and his father, the famed Buddy Ryan, who coached the New York Jets. On game days when the Jets played in Buffalo, the Ryan’s family would make their way down to attend and watch dad, but Rex says he always noticed something else. “The thing I remember most was coming in when my dad was coaching with the Jets, and I was able to go to all the Buffalo Bill games when they would play, and how passionate those fans were, and it was truly amazing.”

Rex is the first head coach hired since the passing of Bills longtime owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr, and though he has only been their coach for a few days, he has already gained the respect of many of the organizations top personnel and players. Bills Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly had nothing but good things to say about the new coach, “You got to understand as a player how much you’re willing to sacrifice and how hard you’re willing to work because when you are successful he’s going to make it fun.” Kelly continued to praise Coach Ryan calling him “blue collar” and claiming that the Bills community already consider him one of their own.

As soon as Rex entered the building for the first time on Monday, he knew there was one lingering problem the Bills organization had no answer for. Who is their quarterback? Ej Manuel, the 2013 first-round pick out of Florida State, has been anything but consistent. Cursed with continuous injuries, he never seems to be able to complete a season. Kyle Orton, who the Bills signed in the middle of the 2014 season, won numerous games for the Bills but retired at the end of the season.

Quarterback troubles are not unfamiliar to Rex however, having had Mark Sanchez single handedly almost destroy his career in New York then facing the troubles of Geno Smith the last two seasons. Rex recognized the problem during a press conference on Wednesday, saying that it is a situation that remains unresolved at the moment. He continued to say that the quarterback needs to be part of the Bills solution, but does not need to be THE solution.”We want competition at every position, competition raises the level of play.”

Whether Rex Ryan can keep the promises he has made the Bills’ fans and organization remains unknown. He has until September to gather his team together and find his defined play makers. What is certain is that under Coach Ryan, the Bills will never be the same.
