Todd Bowles named new Jets head coach

Late last night Phoenix Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has signed on to be the new head coach of the New York Jets. Bowles had a late dinner with a group that included owner Woody Johnson, newly hired general manager Mike Maccagnan, and consultants Charley Casserly and Ron Wolf who looked to get a deal done quickly before Bowles could be wooed by the Atlanta Falcons.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ, Bowles played football at Temple University before being drafted by the Washington Redskins as a safety in 1986. His eight year NFL playing career included two stints with the Redskins, starting on their Super Bowl XXII winning team in 1990, sandwiched around one season in San Francisco.

After retiring, Bowles was a member of the Green Bay Packers player personnel staff from 1995–1996, defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Morehouse College in 1997, and the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Grambling State from 1998–1999. He was the defensive backs coach for the Jets in 2000, Cleveland Browns in 2004, and Dallas Cowboys from 2005–2007.

His first head coaching experience was as interim Miami Dolphins coach for the last three games of the 2011 season after the firing of Tony Sparano where he went 2-1. From there Bowles was defensive coordinator for the Eagles in 2012 and the Cardinals in 2013-14.

Bowles and Mccagnan’s hiring’s are unusual in that they come less than a month after the firing of head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik after the end of last season.
