Brooklyn Net’s starting power forward Kevin Garnett was suspended Tuesday for his altercation with Houston Rocket’s center Dwight Howard during Monday’s heated game.

The physical altercation began at the 7:53 mark of the 1st quarter, when Garnett fouled Howard under the rim. After a series of shoves and pushes, Garnett instigated a reaction from Howard by throwing the ball towards Howard’s turned neck. Garnett then promptly headbutted Howard in the jaw, causing Howard to reciprocate by throwing his hands. The two were quickly separated by teammates and officials.

Lionel Hollins, head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, commented during a post-practice interview, “It’s an emotional game.” “Tempers flare up a little bit and then you have to pay the consequences.”

Howard was fined fifteen thousand dollars for the scuffle while Garnett has been suspended for one game without pay. The next matchup for the Nets is on Wednesday, when Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph of the Memphis Grizzlies will roll into town. The absence of Garnett’s post defense will create a void that seemingly will have to be filled by bigs Brook Lopez and Mason Plumlee. The Nets will hope to stop their six game losing streak against a tough Western Conference team.
