Google’s Nest plans to help you manage your home

Soon, everything from washing machines to light bulbs will be connected with the Nest platform.

When Google purchased Nest Labs – the maker of Internet-connected thermostats and smoke detectors – the search engine giant saw the potential to create a software platform for controlling the myriad everyday devices and gadgets in consumers’ homes, a central hub for the so-called “Internet of things.”

This vision took a major step towards becoming reality Monday morning, when Nest announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that 15 new partners were joining its “Works with Nest” developer program. Soon, everything from washing machines to light bulbs will be connected with the Nest platform.

“Things that magically happen around your house aren’t just sci-fi anymore,” saidNest founder and head engineer Matt Rogers, in a blog post. “They’re real-life Works with Nest connections. And they’re already being used by 1 in 10 Nest customers, in 90 countries, just 6 months after launching.”

“Works with Nest” is the company’s developer program, which allows third-party companies to build-in Nest functionality and compatibility with devices they already manufacture. Dropcam and Mercedes were notable participants in the program, and are now joined by over a dozen other companies.

August Smart Lock can now set a user’s Nest Thermostat to Home when they unlock their door and immediately start warming or cooling the house. The Ooma VOIP home phone service will work with Nest to learn when users’ schedules, so if something unexpected happens – like a child fails to come home from school on time – it can send an alert to their phone. And with Whirpool, the Nest Thermostat can now let your washer and dryer know when you’re home and they will automatically switch to quiet mode.
