Kanye West channels his late mother in Paul McCartney collaboration ‘Only One’

Rapper claims his late mother Donda West spoke through him for his new surprise track, which was released on Thursday.

Kanye West is expected to release the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed album Yeezus sometime in 2015, and the rapper proved minutes into the new year that he is ready to meet his fans’ expectations by releasing a surprise song that may appear on his upcoming LP. Titled “Only One,” the poignant new track features music icon Paul McCartney on keyboard and acts as a touching tribute to West’s late mother Donda.

When West revealed the surprise track, he explained that the song’s title is a reference to his name, as his mother once explained to him that “Kanye” means “Only one.”

“Remember how I’d say, ‘One day, you’ll be the man you always knew you would be?’ If you knew how proud I was, you’d never shed a tear,” sings West, channeling the voice of his late mother, who died in 2007 due to complications during a surgery.

In a statement released Thursday, a spokesperson for West claims the rapper doesn’t even remember singing the track’s lyrics in the studio and truly believes his mother was speaking through him.

“Not only could he not recall having sung those words, but he realized that perhaps the words had never really come from him,” read the statement. “The process of artistic creation is one that does not involve thinking, but often channeling. And he understood in that moment that his late mother, Dr. Donda West, who was also his mentor, confidante, and best friend, had spoken through him that day.”

West, as the voice of his mother, goes on to sing of Donda West’s desire that he “tell Nori about me,” referencing his and Kim Kardashian’s daughter North West.

“My mom was singing to me, and through me to my daughter,” West explained in a statement.

McCartney and West began work on the track earlier in 2014, and its release makes it the first publicly available recording to come from the duo’s collaboration. Rumors last August claimed that they also recorded song allegedly called “Piss on Your Grave” that has yet to surface.
