‘Foxcatcher’ wrestler Mark Schultz comments on director’s decisions

Olympic gold medalist Mark Schultz expressed his grievances with Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller in a Twitter rant on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the wrestler–played by Channing Tatum in the film–was much calmer about his portrayal on Thursday.

For months, Schultz had been quiet about the film and seemed to show his approval via social media, but on Tuesday and Wednesday, Schultz criticized Miller calling him a “liar,” a “punk” and other names. Particularly, the portrayal of Schultz’s relationship with the John du Pont, his coach, upset Schultz.

On Thursday, his post was less antagonistic but still mentioned his concerns with the film. He said that he tweeted out of anger, but he does not regret standing up for himself. He apologized for the “harshness” of his words, but he stressed the importance of protecting the truth of his legacy, his character, his life and his story. He added that he does not regret “calling out the only other man who has had decision making power” concerning his legacy.

Before, Schultz expressed his hatred for the homosexual undercurrent between Schultz and his coach that critics say the movie possesses. He said that relationships between the characters are “insulting” and fictitious in the film. He said that giving the audience an implication that there was any sexual relationship between Schultz and his coach is “sickening.”

He even requested that Miller delete the scene that has the alleged sexual undercurrent. But Schultz did not have a major problem with the scene until he read reviews that interpreted the scene sexually and “jeopardized” his legacy. He added that a press conference should be held to rid of those lies.

He also tweeted that Miller would never win another award for the rest of his life. “The academy is going to turn against you. Watch,” Schultz said.

According to the LA Times, Miller said that Schultz never had any problems with anyone involved in the movie’s production. He said Schultz stayed involved and described him as “generous and forthcoming.” However, Schultz was previously kept away from the press. Channing Tatum said that he is not surprised. The actor said that it has to “be hard for him and very exciting, and I’m sure he doesn’t really know how to process it.”

The movie portrays brothers, Dave and Mark Schultz, joining team Foxcatcher to train for the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Along with Mark Ruffalo and Channing Tatum, the film stars Steve Carell as the schizophrenic multimillionaire sponsor John E. du Pont who shot and killed Dave Schultz at the Foxcatcher Farms estate before hiding in his mansion for two days as officers negotiated his surrender. The Miller-directed film’s script was written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman.

The film was released on Nov. 14. A few days after the film’s release, Schultz released his book entitled Foxcatcher: The True Story of My Brother’s Murder, John du Pont’s madness, and the Quest for Olympic Gold. The memoir describes Dave and Mark’s journey to Foxcatcher Farms, what made him and his brother champions and the story of the wealthiest convicted murderer ever.
