An Oldsmar, Fla. man has been arrested and charged with murder after his mother was found decapitated at the family’s home on New Year’s Eve. Christian Jose Gomez, 23, is in custody after deputies were called to the home by the suspect’s brother, 27-year-old Mario Gomez.

Investigators responding to the home Wednesday night found the decapitated body of 48-year-old Maria Suarez-Cassagne outside the house, and her head in a nearby garbage can. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said that Gomez had been planning to murder his mother for two days because he was angry about her “nagging” him to move boxes to the attic.

Christian Gomez admitted to the murder and told Gualtieri that he had put his mother’s head in the garbage can, and attempted to put her body in as well, but it was too heavy. Mario Gomez, who was home at the time of the murder, found Cassagne’s body and called the police. He said that he thought the noises he heard in the house were the sounds of Gomez putting away the boxes. Mario met the deputies in front of the house and advised them that his brother had left the residence. The house was searched and it was determined that no one else was inside.

Christian was found just a few blocks away riding his bicycle after a 911 call regarding a suspicious person riding a bike in the area. When deputies observed the suspect they attempted to stop him, and a brief foot chase ensued before he was taken into custody.

Sheriff Gualtieri has confirmed that Christian Gomez was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but it is unknown if he has been taking his medication.

The ax believed to have been used in the murder has been recovered. Christian has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held in the Pinellas County jail. The investigation is ongoing.
