Dirk Nowitzki rises to 8th on NBA’s all-time scoring list

Dallas Mavericks’ superstar Dirk Nowitzki has had a Hall-of-Fame worthy 17-year career. The German born superstar has an NBA title, a league MVP award and has made 12 all-star teams. On Friday night, Nowitzki added another accomplishment to an already impressive resume when he surpassed one of the league’s legends for yet another milestone.

During a 102-98 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, Dirk Nowitzki moved to the eighth spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list when he hit a jump shot to pass Elvin Hayes. Nowitzki finished the game with 14 points, and now has 27,322 points for his career.

Nowitzki’s longtime adversary and fellow future Hall-of-Famer Kobe Bryant sat out his third straight game on Friday night. A few weeks ago, Bryant passed Michael Jordan for third all-time on the scoring list. Nowitzki and Bryant shared a moment together after Nowitzki passed Hayes, and Nowitzki joked with Bryant that he would catch him on the all-time scoring list.

Nowitzki has been regarded as not just one of the greatest shooting big men of all time, but one of the greatest shooters ever regardless of size and position. Next up on the list for Nowitzki to pass is Moses Malone, who is less than 100 points ahead of him in the seventh spot.

Currently, Nowitzki is leading a very talented Mavericks team that is sitting fifth in the western conference standings with a 21-10 record. The Mavericks acquired former all-star point guard Rajon Rondo last week via trade, and with that addition, many believe that Dallas will be one of the favorites in the conference to advance to the NBA Finals once the playoffs arrive.
