Jackie Chan expresses shame, anger and shock following son’s drug arrest

There is an unfortunate irony in the indictment of Jackie Chan’s son on drug charges. In 2009, the elder Chan was named China’s anti-drug ambassador.

This past Monday, his son, 32-year old Jaycee Chan, was indicted formally on charges of sheltering drug-users. This comes nearly four months after his initial arrest.

This past August, his apartment was raided by authorities and a search turned up more than 100 grams, or about 3.5 ounces, of marijuana.

Jaycee Chan, who has released three albums and is an actor like his famous father, was subsequently detained by police along with fellow actor and Taiwanese movie star, Ko Kai. Both tested positive for marijuana. Chan is now reportedly facing up to three years in jail.

His father released a statement on Wednesday, reported by China’s official news agency, wherein he expressed shock, anger, and shame regarding his son’s arrest. The elder Chan went on to state he did not plan on using his connections to interfere with the legal case. He even expressed hope that, like him, his son could one day also be an anti-drug ambassador, upon release from his potential jail sentence.

The two actors’ arrest is being viewed in the context of a much larger crackdown in China’s capital. This latest anti-drug campaign has seen the arrest of almost 8,000 people since the beginning of 2014. This is an increase of over 70 percent since the previous year.

Major industry groups representing entertainment agents and managers have signed agreements with the Chinese government that bans the use of drugs in its performers. The agreements specifically prohibit the hiring of performers who have been previously arrested for drugs and include promises to fire those who face charges in the future.

Several other Chinese celebrities have faced drug charges in recent years. These arrests include charges for possession of crystal methamphetamine and various other drugs.

Drug arrests are not dealt with lightly by the Chinese criminal justice system. The penalties for possession of 50 grams of drugs or more is anywhere from three years to a sentence of death.

In fact, this past June saw Chinese President Xi Jinping demanding the swift and severe punishment of those arrested for drugs. Jinping even expressed his plan to have drugs wiped out altogether.

Jaycee, Jackie Chan’s only son with retired actress Lin Feng-jiao, has been detained since his August arrest. Being an only son, he was already the focus of much media attention. The arrest and indictment have increased his notoriety. It is not yet clear when his trial will begin.
