Director named, release date announced for ‘Star Trek 3’

Paramount Pictures has announced that Fast &Furious director Justin Lin is set to helm the third installment of the rebooted Star Trek franchise, according to Forbes.

The film studio has also slated the for-now titled Star Trek 3 a summer 2016 release date, which coincides nicely with the hit television show’s 50th anniversary.

Paramount named Lin as director after Roberto Orci left the project. Orci, who directed the last two Star Trek features, departed only a few weeks ago after rumors swirled that the script he wrote for the third installment fell flat with Paramount executives. Orci co-wrote the script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne.

While Orci will not act as director of Star Trek 3, Screen Rant speculates that Orci is still responsible for finishing the script.

Before deciding on Lin, folks at the studio also considered directors Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish to fill the position.

Lin became available to direct Star Trek 3 only after a previous commitment to the next installment of the Bourne franchise fell through. Lin had signed on to direct the flick that would have seen Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz reprise their roles, however, this version of the film was scrapped when the original Jason Bourne, Matt Damon, expressed interest in returning to the film series.

Lin’s version of the Bourne Legacy would have hit theaters July 15, 2016. Now, the third installment of the Star Trek series is slated for a July 18, 2016 release. Currently, no other films are scheduled to be released on that date. Though Screen Rant also speculates that Universal is holding on to the release date that follows one week after the release of Star Trek 3 for Matt Damon-featured Bourne Legacy.

As stated, director Lin has found recent success with the Fast & Furious franchise, specifically Fast & Furious 6. The film earned $239 million in North America, and $789 million worldwide. Outside of North America, the sixth installment is the highest grossing of the series.

Critics lauded Lin’s direction of the film, and his contribution to the series is generally considered to be responsible for the reboot of the franchise.

Lin’s Fast & Furious 6 background has led some to speculate that his involvement with Star Trek 3 will result in the most action-packed installment of the franchise to date. In addition, his previous work with ensemble casts leads others to believe that we might see a more fleshed-out cast than the heavily featured duo of Kirk and Spock that we’ve seen in the past two films.

We’ll have to wait and see.

It’s unclear exactly when Justin Lin will take his first seat in the director’s chair on the set of Star Trek 3, but audiences are already eager to take their first seats in the cinema come summer 2016.
