New York Amber Alert ends after 5-year-old boy found dead

5-year-old Kenneth White found dead in New York. Police dispute kidnapping story.

An Amber Alert in New York has ended after 5-year-old Kenneth White was found dead late Thursday outside Albany, after being reported abducted that afternoon. The boy was taken from his home in Berne around 1:20 p.m. Thursday. His body was found near the trailer he was taken from by a police K-9 unit.

The initial report of Kenneth’s disappearance stated that two men wearing ski masks broke into the home and took the boy, while pinning down the 19-year-old girl who was watching him. The men allegedly fled in a black pickup truck. The 19-year-old is the daughter of the boy’s legal guardians. However, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple has said that the abduction story was not true, and the child was not actually kidnapped. A person of interest is being questioned today, and murder charges are expected in the case.

Kenneth’s biological mother lives in Amsterdam, N.Y., which is about 30 miles north of Berne. Hie father lives in Massachusetts. He was living with an aunt, who is his legal guardian. Authorities have not ruled out a custody dispute as motive for the boy’s disappearance.

An autopsy is being performed, and Apple is expected to hold a press conference as soon as the results are available.
