A brand new Pentagon video depicts a robot soldier under development that has the balance to perform simple karate-like maneuvers in what looks like something out of a science fiction movie.
Known as the Atlas robot, it is the creation of Google-owned Boston Dynamics, which is developing the robot at the behest of the Pentagon’s research arm, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The idea behind the robot is not to destroy humans “Terminator” style, but to use it to rescue other humans in environments where real people couldn’t survive.
Atlas, also called Ian, was first publicly unveiled in 2013, according to CBS News, and since then the team has been refining the robot. The latest video below depicts the robot performing maneuvers straight out of “The Karate Kid” movie franchise while balancing on cinder blocks.
The robot comes in at 6 feet, 2 inches and 330 pounds — certainly a size a regular human being wouldn’t want to mess with. The robot is also capable of walking, jumping, and even driving a vehicle.
The limitation of the robot is it requires a tethered power source, but the team is working on innovations to allow the robot to eventually walk free of restraints.
The robot has 28 hydraulic joints and stereo vision, according to the Daily Mail. It is considered one of the most advanced robots ever.
Researchers have a goal to create robots that can do more than simple tasks: they want robots that can run at the speed of cheetahs without tiring, maneuver with extreme agility, and withstand unforgiving environments to perform tasks humans can’t do — or wouldn’t want to do.
