Report: Joseph Gordon-Levitt cast as Edward Snowden in upcoming film

The movie will be written and directed by Oliver Stone

Hollywood can leak information too. Reuters reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been cast as whistleblower Edward Snowden in an untitled film to be directed by Oliver Stone.

Snowden, a contractor with the National Security Agency or NSA, leaked tens of thousands of classified documents to the media in 2013. His actions led him to be charged with theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information, and willful communication of classified intelligence to an authorized person. He fled to Russia and was granted a 1-year asylum there in August. He is already the subject of Citizenfour, a documentary film by Laura Poitras that came out in October to a warm critical reception.

Stone will be writing and directing the upcoming film, which is not yet titled. Reuters reports the screenplay is based on two books about Snowden, Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man and Anatoly Kutcherena’s Time of the Octopus. It is being produced by independent studios Open Road Films and Endgame Entertainment, and will start filming in January in Munich, Germany.

Gordon-Levitt, 33, is a strong box office presence. A former child star, he has been in such critical and commercial successes as Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. He most recently directed and starred in Don Jon.

The Huffington Post reports another Snowden film is in the works as well. Journalist Glenn Greenwald’s book No Place to Hide is being produced by James Bond producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. No casting news has been released on that version.
