A nasty internet hoax finds legs.
The latest in a long-running string of celebrity death hoaxes circulating the internet targets Mary Tyler Moore, former star of such classic early sitcoms as The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show. The rumor began when somebody created a “R.I.P Mary Tyler Moore” Facebook page, which included specific details of Moore’s supposed death.
An outpouring of condolences on social media sites ensued once the hoax gained traction.
Mary Tyler Moore’s representatives released a statement about the rumor, saying “She joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimized by this hoax…stop believing what you see on the Internet.”
Given the frequency of celebrity death rumors that spring up on social media only to be proven false, many people who came across the fake memorial were skeptical of it and noted the fact that it hadn’t been reported by any major news networks.
While Moore, 77, is indeed still alive, she suffers from diabetes and has been battling with the disease for quite some time. “She hasn’t been too well,” former costar Dick van Dyke says. “She’s really having a battle with it, I’m sorry to say.” Her diabetes has left her nearly blind, and she has stayed out of the public eye for nearly a year due to the condition.
