Students clean up after Pumpkin Festival riots

“It's just like a rush. You're revolting from the cops. It's a blast to do things that you're not supposed to do.”

Riots at an annual festival in New Hampshire Saturday resulted from a nearby college party gone wrong. Now, students from Keene State College are trying to regain their good reputation for themselves and their school.

Law enforcement clashed with the parties twice Saturday, during which 30 people were injured and 12 arrested, according to NECN.com.

The riots were downright war-like: cars were dented and overturned, windows smashed and tires slashed, street signs and emergency poles were torn down, and fires starting at about 10 p.m. initiated the second riot of the night. Police donned armor and used tear gas, tasers, and K-9’s to dispel the chaos; witnesses said rubber bullets were also in use.

The Keene Pumpkin Festival draws 60,000 people each year. The main purpose of the festival is to amass the largest collection of jack-o’-lanterns in one place.

Keene State students are cleaning up their campus literally as well as figuratively, as they are shown on NECN footage cleaning the litter left from the previous night and telling reporters they will make efforts to keep this from happening again.

“We are mindful that Keene State Students played a part in this behavior and we intend to hold those individuals accountable for their actions,” said president of Keene State College Anne Huot. “We deplore the actions of those whose only purpose was to cause mayhem. And we are grateful for the swift response of law enforcement and first responders who worked to minimize injuries and damage.”

The riots were senseless. “It’s just like a rush. You’re revolting from the cops. It’s a blast to do things that you’re not supposed to do,” 18-year-old Steven French said, according to NECN.
