Marvel and Disney XD reveal animated series will officially premiere in 2015.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy dominated in the box office this summer, and now the entertainment powerhouse is planning to expand on the suddenly-popular franchise. Marvel Television and Disney XD announced at New York Comic Con on Friday that production is already underway on a Guardians cartoon series.
“This is a very exciting time for the Marvel Animation Studio as we get to explore the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe by developing the first-ever Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series,” said Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television. “After starring in the biggest movie of 2014, everyone wants more of Star-Lord and his crew – now they’ll get it.”
The animated series will bring Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot and Drax the Destroyer to the small screen, in what is being considered a spinoff of this summer’s film. Since Marvel launched the animated series Avengers Assemble soon after their live-action Avengers film proved to be a massive success, it comes as little surprise that the company would want to capitalize on the profitability of the highest-grossing film of 2014.
The animated Guardians series will be in excellent hands, as producers who worked on several Marvel films, Avengers Assemble and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are all reportedly planning to work on it. The Disney XD series will launch sometime in 2015, giving viewers a chance to see their favorite intergalactic superheroes again before the 2017 release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
New York Comic Con attendees were treated to a short “test animation” clip, which featured Rocket Raccoon falling through an alien cityscape and landing at the feet of Star-Lord. Rocket shoots his laser gun, but the Guardians leader remarked that he’s “going to need bigger blasters” to hang with him. Attendees also saw glimpses of upcoming episodes of Marvel’s animated Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble series and a full episode of Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.
